Microsoft Edge is a web browser developed by Microsoft.

Microsoft Edge was released in July, 2015. Microsoft Edge replaced Internet Explorer.

Microsoft Edge replaced Internet Explorer as the default browser on Windows 10. It is also the default browser in Windows 10 for smartphones, tablets, and Xbox One. Edge is exclusive to Windows 10 and cannot be used on previous Windows versions.

Microsoft Edge 16 was released in October, 2017.

  • JavaScript: ability to defer/re-defer functions, use polymorphic inline caches, and optimize functions with try/finally blocks

  • WebVR has added support for motion controllers

Microsoft Edge 15

Microsoft Edge 15 was released in April, 2017.

New features:

  • Supports CSS custom properties (aka CSS variables)
  • Intersection Observer API - allows you to asynchronously query the position and visibility of DOM elements relative to other elements or the global viewport
  • Experimental JavaScript features (enabled with about:flags): WebAssembly and Shared Memory and Atomics
  • Support for Payment Request API - enabling simpler checkout and payments on the web on Windows 10 PCs and Phones
  • TCP Fast Open - reduces the number of round trips required to open a TCP connection, improving browser networking performance
  • WebRTC and interoperable RTC video codec support
  • Support for WebVR

Microsoft Edge 14

Microsoft Edge 14 was released in August, 2016.

New features:

  • Supports a new HTML, JavaScript and CSS based extension model (this model is Chrome-compatible)
  • Support for Fetch API
  • New JavaScript features (on by default): Default parameters (ES2015), Exponentiation operator (ES2016), Array.prototype.includes (ES2016), Object.values and object.entries (ES2017)
  • Experimental JavaScript features (enabled with about:flags): Modules (ES2015), Async/await (ES2017), Regex symbols (ES2015)
  • Support for the Web Authentication API (FIDO 2.0 Web API)

Microsoft Edge 13

Microsoft Edge 13 was released in November, 2015.

New features:

  • Support for CSS Mutability Pseudo-classes
  • Support for CSS Range Pseudo-classes
  • Support for CSS initial and unset keywords
  • Supports the new unprefixed Encrypted Media Extensions APIs
  • Graphics updates: Canvas ellipse, Canvas blending modes, <picture> element, SVG external content
  • New JavaScript features (on by default): asm.js enabled by default (blog post, demo) and Classes (ES2015)
  • Experimental JavaScript features (enabled with about:flags): Async functions (ES2016), Exponentiation operator (ES2016), Destructuring (ES2015)
  • Improved user input for <meter> element and oninvalid event
  • Support for the Pointer Lock API (previously called Mouse Lock) for access to raw mouse movement, locking the target of mouse events to a single element, eliminating limits of how far mouse movement can go in a single direction, and removing the cursor from view

Microsoft Edge 12

Microsoft Edge was released in July, 2015.

Microsoft Edge is designed to be a lightweight web browser with a layout engine built around web standards, and Microsoft has committed to updating Edge to embrace new and existing standards that it does not yet support.

Microsoft Edge presents a clean break from the past, free from the legacy code needed to support ActiveX controls, Browser Helper Objects (BHOs), and other bygone web development practices. Additionally, Microsoft Edge provides native PDF support.

New features:

  • Implements Content Security Policy (CSP) 1.0
  • Support for CSS Filter effects (filter property)
  • New JavaScript features: class, for...of, Promise, Proxy, Symbol, WeakSet, acosh, codePointAt, fromCodePoint, hypot, imul, isInteger, isNaN, raw, includes, keys (Array), repeat (String), values (Array)

  • Support for the Media Capture and Streams APIs

  • Support for Object RTC API - enables media (audio/video) to be streamed (sent and received) in real-time directly between web browsers, mobile devices, and servers

  • Support for WebKit APIs
  • Support for the W3C Web Audio API specification

Internet Explorer 11

For Windows 8.1: Internet Explorer 11 was released on October 17, 2013.

For Windows 7: Internet Explorer 11 was released on November 7, 2013.

  • Supports SPDY (on Windows 8.1 only)

 REMOVED FEATURES IN IE11:

  • document.all is deprecated (code that checks for its presence will not detect it, but code that actually uses it will continue to work)
  • attachEvent
  • Quick tabs (CTRL+Q)
  • "Work offline" command removed from File menu
  • Drag and drop of selected content from IE to other programs like Word
  • Use large icons for command buttons
  • The ability to view all cookies at once in Developer Tools

IE11 is fast and standards compliant. However, its major drawback is that it does not run on OS versions earlier than Windows 7 and does not offer syncing for that OS!

Internet Explorer for Macintosh

Microsoft ended support for Internet Explorer for Mac on December 31, 2005.

Mac users are recommended to use other browsers, such as Apple Safari.

Older Internet Explorer Versions

IE10.0 (released in 2012). Was the default browser in Windows 8.

IE9.0 (released in 2011). Support for HTML5, CSS3, SVG and Canvas.

IE8.0 (released in 2009). Full support for CSS 2.1.

IE7.0 (released in 2006). Was the default browser in Windows XP with Service Pack 2.

IE6.0 (released in 2001). Was the default browser in Windows XP.

IE5.5 (released in 2000) Support for XML/XSL, CSS, print preview and HTC behaviors.

IE5.0 (released in 1999) The first major browser with XML support.

IE4.0 (released in 1997). Support for CSS and DOM.

IE 3.0 (released in 1996) is now used by less than 0.1.

IE 2.0 (released in 1995). It is too old. Nobody uses it.

IE1.0 (released in 1995). Does anyone remember it?
