Unit 7 Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • explain why the concept of the self is an important interest area for social psychology;
  • characterize the major areas of research in social psychology;
  • identify cognitive biases in real-life situations, including:
    • Fundamental attribution error,
    • Actor-observer bias,
    • Self-serving bias, and
    • Just-world hypothesis;
  • identify the causes and effects of the need for group affiliation;
  • differentiate between the cognitive behavior of groups and individuals;
  • describe the major theories of motivation and emotion; and
  • identify the factors inherent in situational versus dispositional influences on behavior.
