Grading Rubric for "Essay Based on the Works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle".
Please use the rubric and grade key below to assess
your essay. In addition to the
criteria on the rubric, your work must include the following:
- A pre-writing activity modeled after an activity we have covered in class.
- A formal outline.
- Five paragraphs.
- An introduction paragraph and a one-sentence thesis statement. It must be at least five-sentences total, including the thesis.
- Three body paragraphs; each will contain a topic sentence, and supporting details (major and minor). Each body paragraph must have at least 6 and no more than 9 sentences.
- A concluding paragraph; it must be at least 5 sentences long and restate the thesis (see lecture on conclusions).
- Sentence variety
- Correct use of vocabulary
- Summarization/restatement of ideas
- Correct use of grammar and spelling

Pre-Writing and Outline |
The pre-writing activity shows effort to gain insight toward the topic, follows one of the models used in class. The outline is developed enough to support three paragraphs, and there is a clear relationship between the body paragraphs and the thesis. |

The paragraph clearly presents a thesis and writer’s stance in a developed introduction that is on-topic for the assignment. The paragraph contains two words that establish relationships between ideas. |
