Unit 1: Creating a Saylor Academy Account
While Saylor Academy courses are free, and much of the course material can be viewed without having to sign in or create an account, we do encourage all of our learners to create an account in order to have the richest learning experience possible. The first unit of this course therefore will walk you through the steps on how to create and update your account information. By the end of this unit, you should be signed up as a Saylor Academy learner, which will allow you to fully complete the remaining units of this course: just move from one activity to the next; when you have finished the activity in subunit 1.2, move on to Unit 2.
Completing this unit should take you approximately 15 minutes.
1.1 Registration
If you’ve already created a Saylor Academy account, skip ahead to section 1.2.
Watch this short video to learn how to sign up for and confirm your Saylor account, which will be used to allow you to enroll in courses, attempt exams, and earn certificates of completion.
Use the link to go to the sign up page and follow the steps outlined in the previous video to create and confirm your account.
When creating your account you'll be asked to provide some voluntary demographics information about yourself. While you can opt to skip these questions, answering them can be very useful as it allows us to get a more accurate measure of our learners and their goals, which helps us to make informed decisions about course creation and improvements. You will also be able to edit any of these answers later, which will be explained in the next subunit.
Once you have successfully signed up and logged into your account for the first time, please press the (Log Out) link next to your name at the top of the page. The next activity will ask you to sign in to your account once again, not via the sign up process.
Now that your account has been created and confirmed, go back and try signing in once again. The link here will take you back to the log in page, but you can always also use the (Log In) link located at the top right of the learn.saylor.org site to go directly to this sign in page.
Note: Remember that you can sign in with with the username or the email address that you registered your account with.
1.2 Profile Customization and Settings
Watch this short video to learn how to edit various settings and fields in your user profile, including your email address and demographics settings.
Follow the link to your profile. Using the steps outlined in the previous video, update or confirm your profile's timezone setting and add some information about yourself to your Bio.
You can also choose to upload a profile picture, change your preference about receiving email alerts, and update any responses previously given regarding your affiliations, level of learning, etc.
