Read this excerpt. As you read, you will reach the following line in the text: "I think if the devil doesn't exist, but man has created him, he has created him in his own image and likeness." What do you think Dostoevsky intends to convey in this line?
What does it mean to say that human beings must follow their whims? What does it mean to say that the laws of reason are an illusion? Notice that in this respect, Dostoevsky has a lot in common with Pascal and Kierkegaard; namely, a suspicion of reason.
