The Abbasid Empire

The Abbasid dynasty ruled as caliphs from their capital in Baghdad, in modern Iraq, after taking over authority of the Muslim empire from the Umayyads in 750 CE.

From west to east, The Abbasid Caliphate included portions of modern-day Algeria, Tunisia, Italy, Libya, Greece, Egypt, and Turkey; the entirety of modern-day Israel, the West Bank, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Georgia, Yemen, Iran, and Azerbaijan; a portion of modern-day Russia; the entirety of modern-day Oman and United Arab Emirates; portions of modern-day Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan; the entirety of modern-day Afghanistan and Pakistan; and a portion of modern-day Kyrgyzstan.
